There are two types of alpacas - the Huacaya (wha-KAI-ah) and the Suri (surrey). They usually weigh about 120-175 lbs. They are shy, quite, intelligent and curious animals that require companionship. Alpacas are herd animals and should not be raised alone. They learn by observing other alpacas. They communicate by softly humming.
Alpacas reproduce slowly. Females usually give birth to only one cria per year. Twins are rare. They usually give birth in the daytime without any asistance. Alpacas live to be about 20 years old. Since alpacas are ruminants, and have triple-chamber stomachs, they are grazers who quietly chew cud all day. They are very gentle on the land as they have soft padded feet with two toes.
