Shearing Day is always a lot of fun. Planning is essential to running a smooth day. We usually join other small alpaca farms in the area and have a lot of teamwork and cooperation to get everything done. All supplies should be prepared before the big day. Clear bags for the fleece, ziplock bags for the fiber samples, meds drawn up and labeled, toenail clippers sharpened, scissors for trimming the topknots, tooth trimmer, paper towels and labels for each bag with the name of the alpaca, date of shearing, weight of fleece, 1st or 2nds, and farm name are just some of the items needed.
Skirting the fleece on a skirting table gets rid of the small cuts of fiber called second cuts. This can be done the day of shearing if there is enough help. After skirting, the fleece is bagged, put into cardboard boxes and shipped to a fiber mill for processing into alpaca products that are produced in the U.S. We currently have socks, gloves , scarves, bears, monkeys, alpacas, hats, rugs and scarves.
